Belt problem
I have an 85 cougar that I put a new belt on. It seems to work fine through the rpm's, but when idling, it won't disengage. It's also hard to pull over. any ideas?

I would start by making sure you have the right belt. It sounds too tight. I know everyone hates to pay dealers price but i might buy one from the dealer that way you know it the belt that the machine is called for then go from there.

I had bought a belt from dennis kirk to save some cash and when i got it i compared it to my polaris belt and it turned out to be 1/2inch to short. I buy nothing but polaris belts now

I had same problem on 92 wildcat. Turned out to be
a bad bushing on the primary clutch. It was the bushing
inside the movable sheve. The bushing slid part
way out and wouldn't allow the sheve to return to full rest
position- it would come to rest in a partly engaged position. Sled would move when pulling the cord, and needed brake to keep it stopped. This with a well worn correct belt. This started slowly while out on the trail- noticed when sled kept
moving after trying to come to stop.
Just one possibility.

Had a similar problem a while back. It turned out to be a busted weight! It was stuck in such a way that it wouldn't let the clutch open all the way.

It's the belt it's to tight. If it was the clutch it would not run good thru the rpm's. My sled had the same problem from an after market belt. It was the wrong size

This is kinda off topic to your problem but you might wanna make sure your primary and secondary is aligned just while you are playing in the general area. If not so shim up clutch and align them. If not your might cease your crank. I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE.
