please help, oil all over carb, exhaust flange, not firing on 1 cylinder
my 89 wildcat. i thought my carb wasn't getting fuel because it wasn't firing in 1 cylinder, so i rebuilt the pump for $8. still wasn't firing so i pulled the carb and cleaned it and tried it again. each time i pulled the carb i noticed it was all covered in oil all over the inside, it's the same all around the exhaust flange on the 1 cylinder. i pull the plug and the only thing on the plug is oil. the guy i bought this from replaced one of the cylinders. is it possible that something isn't seated right and the oil is pouring all over everything????

Got spark? Get new plug or clean off oily plug with propane torch, and put in plug cap. Place plug on unpainted engine surface- usually head bolt heads work ok. Crank over and look for spark. Make sure other plug is out also. Be careful not to have spark over plug hole or you might have a small explosion. I have had a bad plug cap cause loss of spark on 88 wildcat. Wire broke off in cap, I think.

they are brand new plugs. it hasn't even burnt yet. i tried that already and it had spark. maybe it wasn't strong enought though? but it looked good. has good compression in both cylinders. runs great...but only on 1 cylinder , i pulled the head and the piston looks good, i'm wondering if it's the coil. if it only runs on 1 cylinder than the oil pump is pumping oil the whole time, than that is the reason why there is oil all over everything, ie. the carb and exhaust outlet.

what if i switch the plug caps. it would switch to the other cylinder, making the coil be the culprit.

Was it running on both when you bought it? Did he run it after the rebuild on the cylinder? Did the rebuild happen over the summer if so he may have done a heavy oiling to prevent any rusting rather than just fogging then rebuilt the other. I would most likely pull the exhaust, plug and carb to clean as much of the "oil" out as I can. A little kero in the intake while cranking it should do the trick to help move it out. If there is a lot in the cyl then it could be all blowback. then new plugs and give it a whirl. if it returns then it is posiable that a oil line is connected to the carb in the place of the gas or eaven the overflow. Dose it have intake injectors? If so swap injector lines. Is it oil or mix you are seeing?

Some sleds are oil injected into each cylinder, keep that in mind. If it's not getting fuel, it WILL still be getting oil. I was working on a sled last weekend which did that, I think the culprit is the center seal on the crankshaft. What is the compression reading on that side??

no fuel or too much fuel
Pete:
Could be stuck or mal-adjusted fuel enrichment circuit (commonly referred to as the choke, but not technically a true choke), or a stuck or un seated float needle. Wildcat definately has separate oil lines to each cylinder. Like mmrosshere asked-is it straight oil or oil/fuel mix? Gas of course will evaporate off over time and leave oil. If it is mix- you are probably flooding due to needle not seating or fuel enrichment circuit staying open. If you are not getting gas, float needle may be stuck closed or carb is not getting gas delivered to the carb body. I think if the needle sticks open you will have gas running out of the carb thru those little breather hoses that stick out of it, but I am not 100% sure of that.

i dont believe it. when i first got the sled i cleaned the carbs and i must've put the floats in upside down. what a dope! fixed it and now it's running great. except at idle, every 30 seconds or so it'll sort of backfire out the exhaust flange on that 1 cylinder and a huge puff of smoke will come out, almost like it's purging itself. i think it might have something to do with that exhaust pipe not being fully seated on the flange.
