1976 Jag 3000 carb rebuild kit

Hello all!

Just bought a 76 Jag 3000 for the kids & I to ride. The previous owner did keep it off the ground (cinder blocks) and covered, although it was outside. I asked him if it ran and he said it did but had bad gas(last years). He gave it a quick shot of starting fluid and it started up on the second pull. Once the old gas got to it it smoked like there was no tomorrow(kind of a dirty brown smoke).....but it was running and the track was turning as he feathered the throttle to keep it running on the old fuel. With my daughter begging me to buy it for her in front of him I couldn't say no. He came down 20 bucks to an even $180.00.

We got it in my garage and start cleaning out all the nests from the animals that had decided to call it home. Everything is looking good after a few weekends of dismantling, sanding, and spray painting.

After searching all of these forums I know I have to clean, and most likely, rebuild the carb. It has a Mikuni VM30-87(Browns Leisure, Al's).

My problem is I cannot find anything online that actually says any thing other than rebuild kit for a VM30.....What does the 87 mean....or can someone tell me exactly the kit I need to do it right the first time.

From my previous searches in here it seems like Small Engine Guy is the guru!
If anyone is 100% certain of what rebuild kit I need please help me out!

Please keep in mind that I am located right between Erie & Pittsburgh PA...Not sure if matters but I normally don't see much below -10F.

Thanks a bunch for this help and all the help I am gonna ask you all in the future!

Mike

The carbs haven't changed since then, the one for the VM30 is the on that you need.
Make sure to drain out all of the old gas and clean the carbs with a good cleaner. Dip type is best, but it seems that you may be able to get away with the spray kind this time.

Hey, welcome aboard! RJ hit it perfectly. If you have some compressed air, that'll really help clean out all the orifices in the carb, etc.

Thanks for the quick replies. The old gas has been removed....actually the whole tank had been removed due to finding a pin whole leak in the tank. Thankfully that was an easy fix(being a metal tank).

Next question-lol. The skis have shocks on them and one is frozen solid. Since neither are shown on Brown's Leisure or Al's breakdown, what is the proper way to measure them to get a replacement...compressed...extended?

Question #3-lol. I filled the chaincase with 80 weight gear oil yesterday, this morning there is a small amount (one paper towel was enough to wipe it out) of oil that leaked out. I know it is not from the drain or fill plug. It might be the lower part of the gasket that I cannot see or 1 of the seals on the shafts. I plan to crack it open and take a look. If I find that it was just the gasket leaking can I put it back together with just Black RTV, or do I need a gasket. Old Jeepers use Black RTV for almost everything-lol

I used to be huge into the Jeep forums before I sold it and found this new hobby. At that point I was the one helping people online, now the shoe is on the other foot. For ALL of you guys helping the newbies out here I wanted to let you know that it is much appreciated!

No problem! If it were me, I'd replace the gasket, although the RTV would probably work fine.

I couldn't find shocks for my '80 Jag. I measured them compressed and extended, then measured the eye diameters and widths. It took some analysis, but I finally came up with a Yamaha shock that would work. The ends were too wide, so I just cut 1/4" off each side. You'll need to grab a couple catalogs that list the detailed specs, and you should be able to come up with something.

I started doing the exact thing, then I realized that the shocks were different on each side-lol, slightly different diameter. I talked to John who is the parts guy at a fairly local dealer who said he had a boat load of new "old" parts just gathering dust. He told me to bring in what I had and he would help me get the right ones. So I am planning on taking both shocks & one ski(at least the skis are the same) up this weekend and just get two new shocks.

As a follow up on the carb issue, I have ordered the repair kit along with a new air intake (I found the old one burned to a crisp under the muffler). I also ordered a #180 main and a #20 Pilot jet. Figured for an extra 4.00 I might as well know that they are new.

The really cool thing about this is the time my daughter is spending "helping" me on "her" sled-lol. Alot of quality time spent together without spending alot of cash. She also realizes that the word "vintage" is a whole lot better than "piece of crap"(as my wife called it when we brought it home-lol).

Thanks again!

Thanks for giving me another source RJ! I was able to get the carb stuff here. They had extremely fast turn around time.

Smile 76 jag's

Hey Guy, Glad to hear you found something your girl can dig...I have two 76 jags and have rebuilt them from the ground up. The carb rebuild is easy but watch out for the fuel pump and the carb flanges, both are prone to have vaccum leaks. If its hard to start after the rebuild, first thing to look for is the broken plastic cable end inside the choke lever box on the dash. If it's broken just turn the piece over, its the same on the opposite side. Good luck. M

Thats why i got back into dirt biking and sleding, my kids. My boy 9 helped me every step in rebuilding his yamaha yz80. Then we determined it was too much bike for him so we bought a honda xr80 (four stroke). then we bought my kx250 and completely rebuilt that one, together. We love working together.

My daughter 11 did the same thing with me on a honda 90 four wheeler. She doesnt like getting dirty as much as my boy but now she knows anyting can be fixed if you put you mind to it. best time ive ever spent with my kids and we have always spent a lot of time together. Just somthing about tearing into somthing that youve never worked on before and figureing out together what it needs to be reliable and fun. Love my toys but really love my kids. wife even joins in on the repairs occasionally. but the best fun is when we all go riding together. They will remember those times as the best in their life.

Sounds like you've got something really GOOD going on... Keep it up! They grow up WAY too fast (well, not wives though).
