Hey guys, had to create a new account, but I picked up a really nice 81 el tigre 6000, all new engine components and bottom end redone. But, they only had one fuel pump hooked up so i got ahold of the bracket and two good working fuel pumps and hooked them up. had plugs out and pulled sled over, pumps worked great and pushed lots of fuel from the gas tank through the T and into each line of each fuel pump. It will start and idle just fine, but the second you touch the throttle, it dies/backfires/bogs and cannot increase RPM at all. I went through the carbs and they are completely cleaned and gone through, used 2 cans of carb cleaner and blew them out with air. What could it be? I advanced the timing from the middle mark to the left mark on stator by turning clockwise to see if the timing was too retarded down, but that didnt really do anything. Has amazing compression and all new fuel lines I installed and new fuel filter. Is it electrical? It has great spark when I pull it over!
I would suspect a lean condition in the carb. I'm not sure which carb those used, but there should be an idle mixture screw of some kind. If it's an air screw, turn it in to increase the ratio of fuel to air. If it's a fuel screw, screw it out to increase fuel to air. If you don't know, try both directions 1/8 of a turn at a time to see if things improve.
I will try it, but they are just standard vm38 mikuni carbs. It has an air screw that I have out 1-1/2 times now. Sorry forgot to mention it has twin AAEN pipes but I contacted them and they require 2 jet sides up on main jets. Whic I did put 410s in. From 390s
Definitely try going IN on the air screws. Try one turn out, then go in 1/8 of a turn at a time until the bog goes away. If the air screw bottoms with no change in performance, check the air/fuel passages to the pilot jet and the pilot jet. You may have to prod the passages with a small wire. Sometimes a step larger pilot jet will help, too.
I will take the jet out and try cleaning it again, I cleaned these really really good though before starting the sled up, all new fuel lines and everything. So be ultra clean. I just tried the air screw in but nothing. starts up fine, but instantly dies when you touch the throttle....... So confused
Mouse next inside the airbox? Lol, not likely though lack of airflow would cause those symptoms. I once bought a 70's Kawasaki KZ400 street bike really cheap because it would start and idle fine but bog upon throttle opening just as you describe. I worked on it for a long time, everything seemed fine and then one day I discovered a large bumble bee lodged in the small passage leading from the airbox to the carb....removed the bee and the bike ran famously. I wish I still had it.
Not sure on your sled, but sometimes there are electric switches in the throttle block and/or magnetic switches on the carbs. If you have those and they are not adjusted properly, the electricity to the coils gets cut off when you try to accelerate. It may not be your problem but it's something else to check on.
I agree!
Try unplugging the 4 way square connector coming from the motor!
Check for spark?
If no spark, jump the brown and black wires!
But be careful you will have no way to kill the motor!
I got it guys!!!! Kill switch needed jumped. It worked but it was causing the bog. It works now!!!! Now to just switch clutches out and call it a day! Need to install hood bracket!
Last question mechanically. My tach is not working. The needle is just bouncing at bottom of the gauge. How is the tach powered on these sleds, I don't have lights either so I think it's my lighting coil on stator for the lights. What is the reading for the lights and what setting do I use on my multimeter!!!!! Thanks guys this forum has always been immense help.
Your sled doesn't have a stator but individual coils!
If your lights are not working your tack may not either!
The 2 yellow wires are your electric output.
The reading will be like 10 v AC at idle and 14 v AC at full throttle? ( YES AC NOT DC!)
Thanks guys! Going to try the lights tonight and see the voltage if the coil is good. But found out backfiring and bog was bad killswitch so I cut it and jumped it! Problem solved! At least I have super clean carbs hahaha
