Good to finally have snow to go play with our sleds! Having a problem with my project sled.
For a quick catch up, I rebuilt the motor last year. New pistons & rings, 2 new jugs and a top cap. The only one thru a ring. Anyway after getting it put back together, 3 pulls and it was running. I let it idle for 20 min or so and when I went to give it throttle it quit. I haven't gotten it to run since.
If I put starting fluid in the spark plug holes it will fire on both cylinders. I removed the fuel line off the fuel rail and it does have pressure. Just does not seem to be getting the fuel into the engine. I ordered a compression tester to verify the cylinder compression (make me feel better that I did not put a ring in upside down).
Any other thoughts in this? Is it possible that the fuel injection could not be working?
It should be 36.5 or so.
I make up an adjustable fuel pressure regulator complete with gauge.
Do you have any codes on the ECU? (flashing long and short)
OK then the trigger coil may be bad?
Pull the throttle bodies out and set them on top of the motor with a rag.
Then crank the motor over and see if you are indeed spraying fuel?
Also take a look at your ECU there should be a Black square or another symbol, what ever one you have, that same should be on each injector as well.
There is something goin on here!
Hey have you had the flywheel off?
Have you opened up the air box?
Also have a look at your exhaust outlet!
Ok sorry, been kinda busy. Now back on this thing.
I pulled the airbox off, then took the thottle body off. The reeds were packed full of corn. So when i initially started it after the engine rebuild, and opened the butterflys to rev it up, it must have sucked the corn from the airbox.
So, I cleaned out both reeds (some performance reeds) put it back together and still nothing. It still fires on starting spray if I shoot some in the cylinder.
I did a compression check, 122 on magneto side and 123 on clutch side. Fuel pressure check was 38#
Stator and everything checked out with in range except the crank position sensor which was low on ohms, 190's
I stuck some paper towel in the engine side of the throttle body, I am not sure how much fuel it should be spraying, but 2 pulls did spray a small amount of gas onto the towels.
I put the throttle body back on. and when I open the butterflys and spray some starting spray in it, it will not fire that way. Perhaps I am not getting much in there since I am laying the can sideways.
What else can I try? I have another throttle body off my 98 zr600 I thought about trying. should I physicaly be able to see it spray fuel if I watch down the throttle body with a light when it is being pulled over?
What ever was in the intake goes into the crankcase. If you opened up the throttle bodies, some of the corn was invariably sucked into the crankcase. That's not good. I doubt anyone will be able to tell you what damage could occur because of that... maybe none.. maybe not. That part sucks.
The corn didn't grow there so there had to have been a critter helping!
Pull the reeds out and inspect the bottom end?
I just got one of those flexible cameras to see just what you have going on!
The thing is you may have to pull the engine back out and split the cases to get it all?
I know the critters got in the air box. I have it pulled out and there was nothing in there but corn. I inspected the crank case and the corn did not make it through the reeds.
So if I have great compression, great spark, the compression should suck the fuel up into the cylinder. what am I missing?
The possibility that the transferes are full?
Try this, pull the reeds and the plugs as well as the belt!
Then put compressed air to the plug hole and see what happens, help it over the compression and let it drop again a few times then do the same to the other!
Ok I did the air pressure through the spark plug holes and it works fine. I did pull the fuel injector rails and watched it spit some fuel out. Not really sure what it should look like but it didn't spit much.
So I seen videos online about cleaning fuel injectors, but they can hook a hose to the top to inject cleaner. The injectors I have do not look like they work like that. Is there a way for me to clean them?
Figure its worth a shot before I just part it out.
Fuel should shoot out at least a foot when the key is turned on.
If not then it is possible that the smart valves are in need of cleaning or have collapsed.
Hey RJ, Mine is not the new style fuel system. I have the '99 cat batteryless efi. So turning it over pumps in the fuel and creates the pressure. So the fuel is delivered to both injectors through a rail.
With the rail off the engine it should spray a mist of fuel out when you turn it over!
It is the same basic system as the 91! The 03 did change to a single fuel line with no return!
The only difference is the bolt pattern on the regulator!
