Puma Skid Mounting

Last week, I was working on the Puma and took a look at the skid mounting. On the Jag, the previous owner had changed the skid mounting; the rear is mounted to the drop bracket; the front to a lower hole in the tunnel. Well, after looking at the tunnel on the Puma, it appears I could do the same. There's a mounting hole in the same spot on the drop bracket and an existing hole in the tunnel to adjust the front of the skid.

I have to imagine they did this to allow for installing a track with a taller lug?

Thanks RJ. That could be helpful given some of the riding I do.

Fairly easy to change the mounts? Loosen track tension, unbolt current mounts, remount? I have a feeling that's how it works in theory. Ha!

I was able to at least check the 4 mounting bolts last weekend. The fronts seem to be OK. The rears will loosen, but one ends up spinning if you loosen the other side. So if I back off the brake side a few turns and move to the throttle side, it won't come loose because the brake side bolt just spins. I don't see anything on the skid to grab into to keep what I assume is a shaft from spinning.

Use a longer bolt with more thread length and a nut on it.
Thread it in until the nut is almost against the tunnel, then lock the nut up tight.
This will hold the shaft from turning while you unlock the other side.
Then simply unlock the nut and remove the longer bolt.

What a task is was! Rear bolts were out in minutes. Fronts.....throttle side came out and the brake side just spun. I spent a lot of time trying to get the other front mount near a hole so I could put the bolt back and loosen the brake side. Don't ask me why, but after a lot of time messing with it, it finally started to back out; and I did not have the other bolt back in. From there, I was able to wrestle the skid out. I foresee this being "fun" to get back into place!

Pics!

I'm going to get new sliders. This was on the list for the off season anyways. Here's how they look:

Should I replace the rear shock? It's not leaking, but could be a good "while I have it out" item. Should I go OEM? Any suggestions or alternatives?

This is the center of the skid; where the long part of the coil spring attaches. Is it normal to have this wear? Also, the wheels that are here wobble a bit. But the bearings are good, looks like the plastic insets for the wheels are worn?

That's true...Did't think of that.

For the center bogie wheels; can I get just the plastic inserts or does the entire wheel need to be replaced? The bearings are good, but the wheels have a slight wobble.
