98 800ZRT buring too much oil

I went for a ride with a 98 zrt 800 I just purchased. It seems to run good, Put about 90 miles on it or so without fouling out any of the plugs. It burned 2.5-3 quarts of oil and 7.5 gallons of gas. Seems to be burning more like 8:1 than 50:1. When I gun it, I leave a thundercloud of blue smoke.

I am not sure where to start looking for problems. Could this be due to a bad oil sensor, or maybe a valve on the pump is stuck opened.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure the cable to yhe oil pump isn't frayed inside & binding. You should be using aout 1 qt oil for every 12-13 gallons of gas.

also check the marks on your oil pump. If you have had it off before. It has marks on there that need to line up. Just another thing to check out.

The return spring on the oil pump was rusted and was holding it wide opened all the time. Sprayed some PB blaster on it and now it is smooth as butter.

Thanks for the help
