clutch repairs

I was wondering how difficult it is to repair a clutch? My 1995 Pantera EFI 580 primary clutch sticks closed at full speed. Upon inspection there is three bushings worn where three arms slide against (sorry I don't know the real names). I see online there is a clutch kit available for repairs. I was wondering if special tools are required and what should I look for?

I also noticed that the clutch looks really dry yet the manual says no lubrication is required. What do you experienced riders do?

I have only had this sled for a few months.

TIA

it is relativly easy, all you need to do is take off the weights and put in the new bushings. look over your weights also.

no grease is needed

im pretty sure that is what you need to know, right?

Very easy. Just be careful with that spring when you remove the cover.

Sounds good! One more question. Do I need a puller or what do I use to get the clutch off the shaft? or is it keyed?

You need a special puller, but if you can get the outside half off without having to remove the other half, just do that. Take out the big bolt on the end and slide the outer half off.

Thanks for the help so far.

I took some of the clutch apart and was able to change the cam arm bushing and pins but I also need to change the bushings #13 (on diagram) which I can't take out unless I can take the spider part off which seems to be threaded. Any ideas on how to remove it? I don't want to force to hard for fear of breaking something.

Looks like you're already into it... I was going to tell you that after taking the cover off a half dozen times myself - I read the manual and it tells how to change the weights by compressing the sheaves, and wedging them in that position. That takes the spring pressure off the weights, and they can be changed without taking the cover off.

Since you're already past that part... the manual tells you to pull the clutch to get at the spider. Then, there are special tools you'll need to take it off. You'll want to heat it with a torch first to loosen the lock-tite too. Are you sure the spider is worn? It looks like a pretty involved job...

Get a manual on CD from eBay. Mine ran me a whopping $10 delivered!

Since it sounds like this is the first time you worked on a primary clutch, don't forget to put it back together with the alignment marks properly aligned. You may already know this, but I thought I'd share since nobody else chirped in.

Thanks for all the great advice!
Getting a manual on ebay is something I plan on doing. The alignment marks I will watch for. Now I just need to find a puller!
