clutch questions (comet)

i have a comet clutch on my pantera 580,
my dad tried a normal jaw puller to attempt to pull it off,
but it chiped a piece of the front plate, then in frustration, tried to uses a hammer, and knocked one of the little fins on the tower that sticks up.

i know its bad b/c the weight distribution is off.
is this a serious problem? and should i get a new clutch?

thanks

_luca

Papa just made a pile of junk!! You must use the correct tool to remove the clutch. I would suggest that you not even start that engine with the clutch in that condition......it could do a lot of damage to both people & property!! Believe it!!

You will need an entire new clutch assembly.

check on ebay.. write comet 108 in search.. the'll be ALOT of those... you just put your stuff back in.. or do like i did, use the whole thing and tell your that dad he NEEDS to buy a REAL clutch puller.. which is a bolt basically.. kimpex makes some for 30$

but that one is PN 0646-110
but mine is PN 0646-122

they are the same in the diagram
im pretty sure they are the comet 108 clutch

on ebay whole ones are going for about 50-100

It will be cheaper to get the whole thing on eBay, rather than buying pieces. Like others have said, put the guts from yours in the replacement. Make sure the shims and bearings (sleeve inside the weights) are in good shape. The shims are pennies apeice. Bearings are $6 or so. It's worth it to change them (if needed) while you have it apart.

You need to know the crank taper of your sled. Go to http://www.hoffcocomet.com/comet/index.asp and that'll give you a list.
