Don't quite know why, since usually the seat is the only difference... but you'll get a ticket in NY for riding 2-up on a 1-up sled.

My Panther (2-up) has helper springs that can easily be clicked into position to handle the extra weight of another rider. It's real nice, since it is so easy to switch in and out. Rides nice with one, and nice with two. Handling ALWAYS suffers when you have 2 riders though. It's more weight, and harder to react quickly. Powder and tight & uneven trails are very difficult on a 2-up. Wide open trails are a breeze though. Gives you and your passenger enough room to move comfortably.
