Middle cylinder dead? Check the spark to it, see if the middle pipe is hot. Then I'd start chasing fuel problems after that, unless you have an electronic throttle limiter?
First thought is lean bog caused by plugged pilot jets. Are the carbs spotless? Is it better if you apply the choke?
Second thought is a fouled plug, my 650 sounds like that when it fouls one. Check for spark as SonofIrishman suggests. It could also be a bad plug wire/plug boot.
swap the plug boots around and try again. the xlt motor fires all cylinders at the same time so it will tell if you have a spark issue. use new plugs also. my GF xlt had the same bog, I had to rebuild the fuel pump to get rid of it.
Mine is doing the same thing. But I can keep it going and ride it. It's sluggish but then picks up till about 30mph then tops out and gets sluggish. I just bout it and it ran great, then I ran it out if fuel and it staring doing that. I'm gonna clean the carbs today and see how that goes.
O man I had exact same problem and all it was is that the terminals rattle loose on the plugs. If thats what it is a little bit of red loctite or solid terminal plugs will solve your problem. Mac0606 id say that's more likely your problem the the op's though.
