Most likely, the inlet needle/seat in the carb was sticking open, allowing fuel to flow into the crankcase. As you cranked the sled to get it running, you pumped the fuel from the crankcase through the cylinder and into the exhaust. You are lucky. Sometimes when that happens, the fuel in the pipe/can sparks and blows things up big time.
Drain the case using the small plugs below the exhaust manifold as RJ suggests. Then pull the pipe/can and drain any remaining fuel from the pipe and can before you try to start it again. Make sure you start it outside with plenty of adaquate ventillation, sleds burn really well. (trust me on that one)
If you still have problems, replace the inlet needle/seats (viton tipped ones are less prone to sticking open). If that does not solve the problem, you may also have a hole in the fuel pump diaphram allowing fuel to enter the crankcase through the fuel pump impulse line.
