Spark Plug issues ???

Ok, i pulled the plugs out of my indy 488fan the other day, just to check things out, since it just got it this spring, and summer is getting way too long. Anyway, they were gapped something like 0.4 when the manual and stickers on the hood say they should be gapped to 0.7, so i gapped them to 0.7, reinstalled them, and tried to start it up. I took much longer than usual as it usually only takes 2-3 pulls to get started, when it did start, it ran rough, and seemed to backfire a bit. Do you think this could be because of the gap or because it was 80+ degrees and muggy, or a combination? Also, ngk bpr9es plugs were used, rather than the reccomended bpr8es plugs. Would this be because of it being rebuilt approx. 1500 miles ago, and does it really make a significant difference? thanks a lot!
