Weight has a huge factor, expecially with surface area & water.
I had a 1996 Seadoo XP, with the 800cc motor. With minor modifications (all air intake) I could spank a 2001 Yamaha 1200 with no problems at all (registered 63 mph on a GPS Becan.) He came up to me screamy bloody murder, how many mods did I have, this & that. I told him my ski weighs about 400lbs wet, his weighed in at 850lbs dry... Granted the newer skies have 140 horsepower + out of the box, but the older ski's actually allowed a rider to get wet...
My current ski is a 1997 Polaris 700. Perfect for tooling around the water. IMHO indestructable motor. Add gas, add oil, do general maintanence & she'll run for ever. Over 300 hrs, prob 290 of them WFO & still has 145lpbs per cylindar. I can't get it air born like the XP, but it still picks up the women just fine!!
