The bog can definitely be from the leaking seal. A bad seal causes a lean condition, which may cause the bog.
What kind of sled is it? Some seals are pretty easy to pop out, others (like Polaris Liberty engines) require you to split the crankcase to get to the seal. That requires pulling the engine and totally disassembling it to get to the seal.
