Mountain sleds need hard snow pack to cover the ground with 5"-12" plus of fresh snow on top for the ride they are made for. With only 12" of snow a mountain sled would just burn out until it hits dirt causing damage to the sled. Mountain sleds need fresh snow for cooling because the 2" paddles will not kick snow on hard pack trails.
