since you're new to sleds you might not know the difference between types.
mountain sleds have longer tracks to help float on the snow and keep it moving. mountain riders ride in +3' of snow...its not unusual for mountain sleds to be heavily modded. longer track needs more power to keep it moving. so these guys put more power into their sleds to help move the track.
trail riders typically have shorter tracks (121-136), and the shorter tracks help the sled w/ a tighter turning radius. trail riders also mod their sleds, but heavily modded sleds are usually lake racers.
to start, if you havent ridden a 4-wheeler, or dirt bike, or even a jet ski, id suggest a 600cc sled. any of the 4 main manuf. offer good trail sleds. you'd just need to figure out which one you like.
