It is best if you take it apart.
You can then check the spring and the weights for wear and replace any bushings/other worn items at that time.
Just be very careful when removing the outer cover as the spring has a lot of tension on it.
Use a "scotch pad" to clean the pulley faces so you do not scratch the surfaces.
