The magnets activate the safety switch in the carburator. If the carb senses that the slide is open but the throttle is not open, the engine dies, that way when a slide freezes in the open position, you don't soil yourself trying to find the kill switch.
They are a pain, lots of people disconnect 'em.. but they are a safety feature. Your call.
