I had same problem on 92 wildcat. Turned out to be
a bad bushing on the primary clutch. It was the bushing
inside the movable sheve. The bushing slid part
way out and wouldn't allow the sheve to return to full rest
position- it would come to rest in a partly engaged position. Sled would move when pulling the cord, and needed brake to keep it stopped. This with a well worn correct belt. This started slowly while out on the trail- noticed when sled kept
moving after trying to come to stop.
Just one possibility.
